Multicap was created at a public meeting in Burnie in August, 1971. Prior to that there were a number of organisations serving people with certain disabilities.
There were, however, some people who had more than one disability - usually a combination of a physical and an intellectual disability.
People with multiple disabilities did not really fall into the categories of people served by the existing organisations. The only options families had was to send their son or daughter to Willow Court in the South of the State.
Multicap's purpose was to provide services to people with multiple disabilities who were not eligible for exisiting services
