Multicap Tasmania turns 50 this year

This year is an exciting year for us as we look forward to celebrating our 50th birthday. On 17 August 1971, a meeting was held in Burnie where it was agreed to establish an organisation to support children with complex disabilities. The subsequent organisation formed was the Tasmanian Society for Multiply Handicapped Children Incorporated which was the forerunner for the organisation now known as Multicap Tasmania.

Initial activity involved considerable fundraising activities where considerable funds were raised and resulted in 26 hectares of land being purchased at 186 West Mooreville Road, East Cam and building developments – now known as Panorama, Westwood and Horizon; as well as the 3 units (Hodge Avenue) built in more recent times.

From those days, the organisation has grown to its current size with more than 300 clients and 300 staff delivering services with properties in Wynyard, Burnie, Ulverstone, Devonport, Kindred, Latrobe and Launceston.

During this year we aim to hold a number of events that help celebrate our history and the commitment to our organisation that have been made by many over the years. We are reaching out to our broader Multicap Tasmania family to assist us in any pieces of our history that you are aware of, including any items or memorabilia that are floating around, media items, or contact details of anyone who may be able to provide part of the story of our history.

I would encourage anyone with information about our history to reach out to Nina Edwards at our Burnie office. Nina is building a history of activities across the years and is planning for more significant celebrations and events as the year goes on.

We would love to hear from you
